The General Manager of Mafia developer Hanger 13, Roman Hladík, has announced that the studio is working on the next game in the series. The game’s confirmation was made as part of an in-house interview with some of the creators of the original game in celebration of its 20th anniversary. Check out the full quote from Hladík about the tentatively named “Mafia 4” below.
“I am pleased to officially announce that the development work for the new Mafia game has begun! While the release is still a few years away and we can’t share any more details at this time, we can’t wait to continue the popular saga and immerse our fans in new stories.” – Roman Hladík, General Manager of Hanger 13.
Unfortunately, with the release of the game still being “a few years away,” it’s unlikely we’ll see a full unveiling of Mafia 4 anytime soon. However, a report from Kotaku earlier this year claimed that the new game will be a prequel and that it is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, instead of the Mafia 3 engine that was used for that game and the recent Mafia Trilogy. That likely means the game will be a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S current gen-only title.
The prequel is said to be taking place before the original title that was set in the 1930s, although there’s no information at present on what time period fans can expect from the new game.
Mafia 3 was the first title to be released by Hanger 13, which was only founded in 2014. The second, and most recent game, is the Mafia: Definitive Edition remake that was released in 2020 alongside a remaster of the second game, which was handled by D3T.
With Mafia 4 still being a few years away, expect to see official details trickle out slowly.
